        Maitake Mushroom (Grifola)
        According to researchers at the National Cancer Center in Japan, complete tumor elimination was experienced in about 80% or cancer-induced animals fed extracts from maitake, shiitake, and reishi mushrooms. Compounds in each of these and improve antibody responses,but maitake seems to have the strongest and most consistent effect.
        Maitake exhibits potent activity against cancer, inhibiting both carcinogenesis and metastasis, according to Hiroaki Nanba, Ph.D., of the Department of Immunology at Kobe Women’s College of Pharmacy in Kobe, Japan. Animal research suggests that maitake supplements increase the body’s ability to kill tumors. When maitake was compared to a common form of chemotherapy, the maitake “D-fraction” demonstrated superior ability to inhibit the growth of tumors (about 80% versus 45%). Unlike other mushroom extracts, the maitake extract shows strong anticancer activity even when administered orally. Dr. Nanba reports that maitake increases the NK cell’s tumor-killing ability and enhances other immune cells’ production of interleukin-1, a protein that aids in defense against cancer and viruses.
